53-55 Liverpool Street, Sydney
Status: Under Construction
Objective
An existing heritage listed warehouse in Sydney CBD is re-configured as a 153-room boutique hotel with the addition of three upper storeys. The Conservation Management Plan, prepared by Letizia Coppo and Associates, required the retention of the original timber framed floor structure and the reconstruction of a portion of the Liverpool Street façade. The building also required structural upgrading to meet the current earthquake standard. This was achieved by removing the light limber framed roof and replacing it with a steel transfer structure and diaphragm slab.
Outcome
In keeping with the original timber structure, the new upper 3-storey addition is also designed to be constructed in timber. Sydney Council were very supportive of the design strategy and the development application consent was processed in six months. The project is currently due to commence construction in 2018.
